uPVC Door Repairs London: Door Not Closing or Locking?
By BuilderFix Glazing · Last updated June 2025
A uPVC door that sticks, catches against the frame or refuses to lock can be frustrating and may affect the security of your property. Before replacing the complete door, it is worth identifying the cause. Many door problems involve alignment, worn hinges or a faulty locking mechanism.
What This Guide Covers
- A door that has dropped on its hinges is the most common cause of locking difficulty
- Multipoint lock gearbox failure causes a stiff handle or a handle that lifts but does not lock
- Worn or cracked hinges can often be replaced without changing the door or frame
- Do not force a stiff handle — it can damage the gearbox and increase the repair cost
- Provide postcode, photographs of the door and close-up images of the hinges and lock
Introduction
London homeowners face unique challenges when it comes to glazing — from period properties with sash windows in conservation areas, to modern developments requiring structural glass installations. Getting the right advice before you commit can save you significant time and money.
At BuilderFix Glazing, we have completed thousands of glazing jobs across Greater London and Surrey — from emergency repairs in Kensington and Chelsea, to bespoke walk-on glass installations in Mayfair and Belgravia. This guide is based on real experience and the questions our customers ask us most often.
In Depth
The single most common cause of a uPVC door that is difficult to lift and lock is a dropped door. All uPVC and composite doors hang on hinges that are bolted through the frame. Over years of use — thousands of opening and closing cycles — the hinge screws loosen marginally, the hinge bodies wear, and the door shifts downward and outward by a few millimetres. A door that has dropped 3–5mm will no longer align its locking points with the keeps set into the opposite frame. The handle lifts but nothing locks; or the handle feels tight because the lock points are bearing against the face of the keeps rather than sliding into them.
The fix for a dropped door is hinge adjustment or hinge replacement. Many uPVC and composite door hinges have adjustable slots that allow horizontal and vertical repositioning without removing the hinge body. A screwdriver, the correct Allen key and ten minutes of patient adjustment can often bring a dropped door back into alignment. If the hinge body itself is cracked, corroded or has worn beyond adjustment, the hinge needs replacing — a job that takes around 45 minutes per hinge and is best done while the door remains on its bottom hinge to prevent the weight pulling the frame.
Multipoint lock gearbox failure is the second most common cause of door locking problems. The gearbox is the central mechanism that drives the hook bolts, rollers and deadbolts simultaneously when you lift the handle. Gearboxes typically last 10–20 years before the internal cam wears. When they fail, the handle becomes stiff or floppy, the lock points stop engaging, or the door can be lifted but not deadlocked with the key. Replacement gearboxes must match the existing mechanism's dimensions, fixing holes and follower configuration — a photograph of the existing gearbox label is the quickest way to identify a compatible replacement.
Draughts and water ingress around a door are related problems. A door that cannot compress fully against its seals because of misalignment will let cold air in, and in heavy rain water can follow the same path. Replacing the rubber seals on a door that sits 5mm out of position will not resolve the problem. The door must be realigned first, then the seal condition reviewed.
If a door cannot be locked at all and the property cannot be secured, treat this as an immediate priority. Contact BuilderFix with photographs, your postcode and a description of the fault for a same-day estimate wherever possible.
