uPVC Window Repair Cost London 2025: What You'll Pay for Handles, Hinges & Locks

Most uPVC window problems do not require a new window. A stiff handle, a broken hinge, a failed lock mechanism, or a misted sealed unit can all be repaired at a fraction of the cost of replacement. Here is what repairs realistically cost in London in 2025.

What This Guide Covers

  • Window handle replacement: £60–£100 including parts and labour
  • Hinge replacement (pair): £80–£150 depending on type and access
  • Multi-point lock repair or replacement: £100–£220
  • Sealed unit replacement (misted glass): £80–£250 per pane depending on size
  • Door lock realignment (dropped door): £80–£140

Introduction

London homeowners face unique challenges when it comes to glazing — from period properties with sash windows in conservation areas, to modern developments requiring structural glass installations. Getting the right advice before you commit can save you significant time and money.

At BuilderFix Glazing, we have completed thousands of glazing jobs across Greater London and Surrey — from emergency repairs in Kensington and Chelsea, to bespoke walk-on glass installations in Mayfair and Belgravia. This guide is based on real experience and the questions our customers ask us most often.

In Depth

The single most important thing to understand about uPVC window repair is that the frame and the glass are separate components. The vast majority of common faults — stiff or broken handles, hinges that have dropped, locking mechanisms that have seized, or glass that has turned milky — affect just one component. In all of these cases, replacing that component is almost always the right answer. Replacing the whole window because of a broken handle is like replacing a car because of a flat tyre.

Handles are the most common repair. A uPVC window handle typically fails in one of three ways: the handle becomes stiff and difficult to operate, the handle mechanism breaks internally so the window will not latch, or the spindle shears and the handle turns without operating the lock. All three are handle replacements. The handle itself costs £15–£40 depending on the style and brand, and fitting takes 20–30 minutes. Total cost in London including a call-out: £60–£100 in most cases.

Hinges are the second most frequent repair. uPVC window hinges take considerable stress over their working life — every opening and closing cycle loads the hinge, and over 10–20 years, butt hinges and friction stays wear, corrode, or crack. A worn hinge means the sash drops, the seals compress unevenly, and the window becomes draughty or difficult to close. Replacing a pair of hinges costs £80–£150 depending on the hinge type and the size of the window. Friction stays on large casements at the upper end; standard butt hinges on smaller windows at the lower end.

Multi-point locking systems are more complex. uPVC doors and large windows use multi-point locks — a mechanism with multiple locking points that engage simultaneously when you lift the handle. These mechanisms wear over 15–20 years, particularly at the gearbox (the central mechanism that drives the lock points). When the gearbox fails, the handle becomes stiff, the lock points do not engage, or the handle snaps. Replacing the gearbox costs £100–£180; replacing the full mechanism with new lock points costs £150–£220. The cylinder lock itself — which is what burglars attack — can be replaced separately for £40–£80.

Misted glass is a sealed unit failure, not a window failure. The misting you see between the panes is moisture that has entered through a failed edge seal. The seal around a double-glazed unit is designed to last 15–25 years; when it fails, the only fix is replacing the glass unit. The frame stays. A standard casement unit costs £80–£150 to replace including the new glass and fitting; a large picture window or a door panel costs £150–£250. This is significantly cheaper than a new window, which would include both the glass and the frame.

Before any repair, we always provide a free written estimate — by photo in many cases, confirmed on site before we start. Fixed pricing means you know the cost before we touch anything.
